The Droplet Effect
The “droplet effect” is a very important principle in entertainment.
Many want to win elections and Supreme Court cases, win at the box office and the best-sellers list. Nothing wrong with that, of course. You can call these “downpour” moments. Big. Noticeable. Measurable. Consequential. The most important thing … or so we think.
What happens in a downpour? People run for cover. Streets are flooded. Rivers overflow their banks. The downpour arrives unexpectedly and passes quickly, leaving damage and clean-up.
The droplet, however, is small but significant. Steady. Persistent. Hidden. Drop. Drop. Drop. Over many months and years and decades, it creates deep, lasting channels in society, among industries, within audiences. Not flashy. Often unnoticed. But always there, and when for good, helping entertainment flourish.
We need more droplets — in the arts, in business, in neighborhoods, in relationships, in every square inch — imagining what is possible and doing the day-in-and-day-out (often mundane) work that brings about lasting change.
